Rules for singular and plural subjects

Singular Subjects: everyone,someone,
anyone, No one, Each, Either, and Neither
Example:
Neither of these books is
very new
Every man and woman is
eligible to vote

Introductory It is singular and always followed by a singular verb.
Example:
It is his grades that worry
him
It was the dogs which
awakened me

Words
that come between a subject and its verb do not change the number of
the subject. Prepositional phrases often have this position.
Example:
The man (in addition to/ along with/ together with/ as well as) his ten
children is leaving soon.
4.
Beware of subjects joined by connectors (both, and, several, many, few). It
indicates that the subjects take a plural verb.
Example:
Only a few have passed the exam
A red Honda and a blue Ford are parked outside.

Example:
Neither the students nor the teacher is allowed to smoke
Either the teacher or the students have your books

When none,
all, some, any, majority, half, etc are followed by a prepositional phrase, the number of

singular or plural.
Example:
All of the book has been destroyed
All of the books have been thrown away.
A number of student are coming late
The number of student is coming late
7.
Expressions stating one amount of time, money, weight, volume, collective
nouns etc are plural but take a
singular verb.
Example;
Two weeks is enough of time for a nice vacation
Ten extra pounds is a lot to lose in a week.
That class has its final test
on Friday
The police is coming soon.
The government decides a new policy
The basketball team plays the game tonight.
